introduction log.

JUNE 1, 2021

The first day of summer - it’s unbearably hot. Temperatures are high and relentless, and without a single cloud in the sky, the sun blazes down heavily on the unlucky few stuck outside.

Weather predictions warn of an intense heatwave that’ll last all week long. The young and elderly are advised to stay indoors and hydrated, and anyone with the symptoms of a heat stroke is urged to head straight to the city hospital. Schools are temporarily closed until new air conditioners can be installed, and businesses come to a slow grind as many call out sick from heat exhaustion.

The city warns that it’s going to be a long seven days.

  NEWCOMERS

    You wake up.

You’re left to your own devices. You have a vague memory of the last few moments of your time back in your world, in familiar surroundings, but you’re now somewhere new. Whether you’ve awoken on an unknown rooftop, in a stranger’s bedroom, behind cell bars, or under six feet of water - you know that you’re no longer at home.

You’re on your own for the time being. You must escape whatever predicament that you’ve found yourself in and find answers to your own questions. What brings you here? How did you arrive? What happened to your friends and family? You have an hour to explore and speak with the people of this world before your time runs out.

Something then vibrates in your pocket.

  RESIDENTS & NEWCOMERS

    Your phone vibrates.

It buzzes incessantly until you pick it up, but when you look at the screen, it’s blank. It will not turn on, no matter how hard you press the buttons. It’s possible that it overheated and shut down, but it’s unusually cold to the touch, almost as if you’re touching a brick of ice. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, white text appears on a black background.
    Decryption confirmed.

    Condition green.

    Booting program.
The screen goes dark once more. Seconds later, new words are typed.
    WELCOME TO [ AVA ]

    → MISSION 001
HEAD TO THE CITY CROSSWALK BY 1500. FIND THE [ OTHERS ]. YOUR REWARD WILL BE ANNOUNCED THEN. FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.

  WELCOME TO [ AVA ]

You can't avoid the mission; you don't have any choice. Any attempt to ignore or avoid it is futile, as convenient coincidences occur all around you as a motivator to go.

Did you have work? For some inexplicable reason, your shift has been cancelled. Were you trying to get some rest? The fire alarm went off and you were evacuated from your home. Did you attempt to travel to another part of the city? The sidewalks and roads have been closed due to a sudden blackout.

No matter what you do, you are compelled to head to the city crosswalk.

For the middle of the afternoon, it's unusually quiet and empty. Despite the heat warning, there should still be more than just a handful of you and a few others, but you won't have the time to ponder about it. Your phone finally reboots and appears to be back to normal - or so it seems. You've got a new app.
    [ AVA ]
It's an icon with a white eye. It stares at you, and the screen remains frozen until you press it. It then starts the initialization process.
    WELCOME TO [ AVA ]

    PEACEFUL DAYS ARE OVER

    ALEA IACTA EST
The text vanishes, revealing the app's interface. It's an online social media network with public forums and private messaging, but it's completely devoid of content. It currently only contains the user profiles of those who have signed up for the app, and you are one of them. Your full name, date of birth, personal address, height, weight, and a mugshot that you don't recall taking are all listed on your profile.

You quickly discover that you have no way of deleting or even editing your information. You can't even get rid of the app. The option simply does not exist.

Minutes after opening [ AVA ], you receive a notification. There have been two new forum posts. MISSION 002 and MISSION 003 are the names of the new threads. You open them to read.
    → MISSION 002
NEWCOMERS, WELCOME TO VITAE. YOUR GOAL FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS IS TO SURVIVE. IF YOU ARE ALIVE TO SEE THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH, YOU WILL BE GREATLY REWARDED.

    → MISSION 003
RESIDENTS, BE AWARE OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE THIS CITY. ONLY TRUST THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW. YOUR COMPENSATION WILL BE PROVIDED IN TWO WEEKS' TIME.
These threads allow you to leave comments. What do you do now?

Delivery drivers always have to call me if they want to know where my house is! It's hard to find!

[ That aside, Connor feels the same. No one likes getting doxxed, even if it's to a select group of people--mostly because they're strangers. ]

That would be weird to leave out though. Would be nice if we got paid for this too, but like... I wouldn't want to bring strangers in my house. Dad will freak out. You're probably the same, right?

[ An uncomfortable twitch of his lips betrays Deuce's answer even before he speaks. ]

I'm not letting any weirdo near my mom.

[ Especially not anyone who evidently tampered with their phones and got into their personal information like this. Someone like that can't mean well. ]

Doubt there's really anything good in this for us. I mean, it's too sketchy, right?

[ Even for him, and his threshold of believability is incredibly low. ]

Sketchy? Yeah. Good? Maybe. We don't have any way of knowing right now until the two weeks pass.

[ There's a small glint in his eyes. ]

Maybe we should call customer service for our phones...? Or maybe hire a hacker to take a look at the app.

Don't know how I feel about waiting on whatever's next...

[ Strangers hacking their phones and challenging them to survive is too suspicious, even for him.

Not that they can do much about it, he supposes. ]

Maybe a hacker could figure this out, but where do you even find one of those?

Well, I think we have two rich people here with us.

[ He scrolls up to their profiles. It's definitely Noah and Malleus. ]

They can probably find and hire someone with their connections and all. I'm actually surprised they didn't declare that yet.

[ Whether they did or not, Connor hasn't been paying attention much to the people themselves anyway. ]

[ Curious, Deuce peers at the screen, and recognition lights up his features. ]

Oh, I know those guys. [ Both of them, small world. ] Dunno if Noah could do something like that, but...

[ He brings a hand to his chin as he hums in thought. ]

Wouldn't they get in trouble anyway, since hacking's illegal?

Anything is legal as long as you have money.

[ Yeah. Is it a jaded line of thinking? Probably. But he also doesn't care enough regarding the two's well being for now, since they're pretty much strangers to him. ]

Besides, the government hires hackers too.

[personal profile] pursuit 2021-06-10 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure money doesn't change laws...

[ Hi jaded, meet naive.

Regardless, of course, Deuce isn't keen to get his friends in trouble. But then, he's certain they're too smart to do anything reckless. Hopefully. ]

Couldn't we report this to the authorities, or something?

Well, like... how high do you wanna go? It looks like we have a police officer here with us too.

[ He points over to Leon. ]

I slipped a whopee cushion under him once. That was fun.

[personal profile] pursuit 2021-06-11 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I guess an officer's a good place to start? At least he has to believe us.

[ Because he may be naive, but he knows this will sound crazy to anybody not experiencing it. ]

But why would you do that to a cop?

[personal profile] infolds 2021-06-11 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not? Anyone's fair game in my book.

[ Yeah. Sorry he pranked your mancrush, Deuce. ]

But like... is he in a high enough position to make other people listen to him?
pursuit: (provoke)

1/2

[personal profile] pursuit 2021-06-11 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't do that to a cop though!

[ He's an officer of the laaaaaw-

Also yes 100% mancrush. ]
pursuit: (sigh)

[personal profile] pursuit 2021-06-11 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ...Okay, okay. He's fine it's alright even if pranking public servants makes him feel like hitting something he's a good boy now it's cool.

That's what he's telling himself anyhowm ]

A-anyway... At least it'd be somewhere to start. Something legal, right?
infolds: (pic#2906196)

[personal profile] infolds 2021-06-11 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess.

[ Connor is very much not into the law or being good like Deuce is, or at least that's what he thinks. ]

I wonder if we can show them some kind of visual proof that something weird is going on...

[ He tilts his head. ]

Video evidence? Hand over our phones so they can check it out? I doubt they'd have a computer whiz with them though. So that means... we're stuck.
pursuit: (sigh)

[personal profile] pursuit 2021-06-14 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
A guy who can see it himself might be credible to his co-workers, at least...

[ Maybe. Hopefully.

But if they don't believe him, then they really would be stuck, wouldn't they? ]

This is such a strange situation to be in.

[personal profile] infolds 2021-06-17 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda like out of a movie, right?

[ Hm. Connor looks around at the people again. ]

I'm gonna ask these guys stuff. I'll talk to you later, uh...

[ He's gonna check his phone real quick. ]

Bye, Deuce!

[ Someone he actually said bye to properly... amazing. ]
pursuit: (relief)

[personal profile] pursuit 2021-07-01 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, okay.

[ They've probably all got better things to do than loiter out on the sidewalk in the middle of a heatwave, come to think of it...

A pause, before he lifts a hand for a little wave. ]

See you, then.
