introduction log.
JUNE 1, 2021
The first day of summer - it’s unbearably hot. Temperatures are high and relentless, and without a single cloud in the sky, the sun blazes down heavily on the unlucky few stuck outside.
Weather predictions warn of an intense heatwave that’ll last all week long. The young and elderly are advised to stay indoors and hydrated, and anyone with the symptoms of a heat stroke is urged to head straight to the city hospital. Schools are temporarily closed until new air conditioners can be installed, and businesses come to a slow grind as many call out sick from heat exhaustion.
The city warns that it’s going to be a long seven days.

NEWCOMERS
- You wake up.
You’re left to your own devices. You have a vague memory of the last few moments of your time back in your world, in familiar surroundings, but you’re now somewhere new. Whether you’ve awoken on an unknown rooftop, in a stranger’s bedroom, behind cell bars, or under six feet of water - you know that you’re no longer at home.
You’re on your own for the time being. You must escape whatever predicament that you’ve found yourself in and find answers to your own questions. What brings you here? How did you arrive? What happened to your friends and family? You have an hour to explore and speak with the people of this world before your time runs out.
Something then vibrates in your pocket.
RESIDENTS & NEWCOMERS
- Your phone vibrates.
It buzzes incessantly until you pick it up, but when you look at the screen, it’s blank. It will not turn on, no matter how hard you press the buttons. It’s possible that it overheated and shut down, but it’s unusually cold to the touch, almost as if you’re touching a brick of ice. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, white text appears on a black background.
Decryption confirmed. The screen goes dark once more. Seconds later, new words are typed.
Condition green.
Booting program.
WELCOME TO [ AVA ]
→ MISSION 001
HEAD TO THE CITY CROSSWALK BY 1500. FIND THE [ OTHERS ]. YOUR REWARD WILL BE ANNOUNCED THEN. FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.
WELCOME TO [ AVA ]
- You can't avoid the mission; you don't have any choice. Any attempt to ignore or avoid it is futile, as convenient coincidences occur all around you as a motivator to go.
Did you have work? For some inexplicable reason, your shift has been cancelled. Were you trying to get some rest? The fire alarm went off and you were evacuated from your home. Did you attempt to travel to another part of the city? The sidewalks and roads have been closed due to a sudden blackout.
No matter what you do, you are compelled to head to the city crosswalk.
For the middle of the afternoon, it's unusually quiet and empty. Despite the heat warning, there should still be more than just a handful of you and a few others, but you won't have the time to ponder about it. Your phone finally reboots and appears to be back to normal - or so it seems. You've got a new app.
[ AVA ]It's an icon with a white eye. It stares at you, and the screen remains frozen until you press it. It then starts the initialization process.
WELCOME TO [ AVA ]The text vanishes, revealing the app's interface. It's an online social media network with public forums and private messaging, but it's completely devoid of content. It currently only contains the user profiles of those who have signed up for the app, and you are one of them. Your full name, date of birth, personal address, height, weight, and a mugshot that you don't recall taking are all listed on your profile.
PEACEFUL DAYS ARE OVER
ALEA IACTA EST
You quickly discover that you have no way of deleting or even editing your information. You can't even get rid of the app. The option simply does not exist.
Minutes after opening [ AVA ], you receive a notification. There have been two new forum posts. MISSION 002 and MISSION 003 are the names of the new threads. You open them to read.
→ MISSION 002These threads allow you to leave comments. What do you do now?
NEWCOMERS, WELCOME TO VITAE. YOUR GOAL FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS IS TO SURVIVE. IF YOU ARE ALIVE TO SEE THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH, YOU WILL BE GREATLY REWARDED.
→ MISSION 003
RESIDENTS, BE AWARE OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE THIS CITY. ONLY TRUST THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW. YOUR COMPENSATION WILL BE PROVIDED IN TWO WEEKS' TIME.

Jun Kohinata | OTA
With the instructions on his phone being his only clue to what's going on, he'll comply. It takes some time to first get off the roof and to find out where the hell the city crosswalks is, but eventually he gets there.
He doesn't really initiate conversation with anyone, only occasionally eying the people arriving -- no one he recognizes. Mostly he's watching his phone. Though, to anyone else this short high schooler might stick out like a sore thumb between his school uniform made for colder weather - and the fact he has bright green hair]
'Alea iacta est' [He murmurs the words to himself, with perfect pronunciation.] The die is cast...?
[None of this can be good, and his worried expression says as such.]

Are you okay? I didn't catch what you were saying but you seem troubled.
[ Jun's hair color sticks out to Nier and he finds it a bit odd. He thinks it might have been dyed that way as a fashion statement or something. Trends always change.
What a strange guy. ]
Hm, I don't remember seeing your face before. This might be our first time meeting. You can call me Nier.

[Neither the foreign words nor the English translation mean anything significant to him. He skipped out on the Latin himself, assuming it was keysmashing, and he hasn't picked up on Jun's worried expression, mostly oblivious to the emotions of others and his own.]

it might not be the time to point that out though, especially with— he was just kicked out of the university due to a fire alarm insistently going off and sending people home. there’s a traffic jam to his house. there’s a blockade to the zoo. would he go, then? what else did he have to do?
whatever just happened to his phone. must be maleware, even if these damn iphones swear they don’t get malware. what’s strangest of all is the barrier creeping across the sky and locking them in silently. no one else notices but this little group gathered at their messaged destination. once he finally puts out a cigarette burned to the very bud at the top of trash bin with a sand dish (he’s mindful of those around him and maintains proper distance; no one else has to stress smoke for him, much less kids), zeke decides to walk up to the first that had gotten his attention: the green haired one that spoke the words like a studious angel. ]
“A point of no return” . . . Do you enjoy Latin? Or history?
[ he figures it’s the best way not to freak him out any further than the whites of his eyes portrayed— be distracting. be kind, and be as generous with his smiles as he usually is. he studied behavior. he knew a nervous primate when he saw one, and even if he was trying to keep calm . . .
something didn’t feel right at all, and he’s refraining from yelling about military conspiracy theories involving alien weaponry. that part of him should stay on the dark web. ]

The die is cast? You could read that stuff? It sounded like Latin but it’s not like I speak it. Guess it’s lucky somebody here does. “Peace is over, the die is cast”?

Just what the heck is that supposed to mean, anyway?

I'll have you know that you'll face great consequences if you dare hurt me or anyone from my family.
[ The one thing that can get the usually polite and patient Noah angry is giving him some sort of perceived threat. He came all the way here in dangerous weather to be 'rewarded' with this bullshit????? ]
crosswalk
[ Noah stands out a bit from the NPCs due to his white hair and his choice of dress (loose-fitting white clothes), but he soon has to sit down on a roadside bench despite his parasol. It's really not a good time to be out now, and he had left his house without an accompanying servant. He's sure the maids will notice his absence and come looking for him eventually, but he might as well try to get home before that happens.
It really would be easier for him to go and meet these 'newcomers' if the sun wasn't trying to kill him. He'll try to get one of the new people's attention by waving at them. ]

Yuya Sakaki | Resident | OTA
[Yuya was sure he muted his phone.
But it's rattling in a drawer at the counter, vibrating against the wood. He's currently moving an order of afternoon tea from the rolling cart to the table. He's trying to ignore it. He thinks, after a minute they'll get the idea and hang up.
But it doesn't stop, even well beyond how long it would normally take for a call to go to voicemail. It doesn't even pause? And Yuya's smile becomes tight as he shifts stupid, tiny cakes to the customers.]
Please enjoy. Is there anything else you need? [Say no, say no...]
[The Crosswalk]
[Of course, what he's greeted with doesn't make a lot of sense either. Some app he doesn't recognize reboots his phone. It must be some kind of malware, which sucks because he has no idea how to get it off. And now it's giving him some ominous demand to go to the central city crosswalk. Actually, maybe it's ransomware and he's going to get jumped.
He doesn't think much about it as he closes the teashop a half an hour early, changed out of the kimono and into a brightly colored graphic tee and pants. Better for errands.
And maybe he's a little curious, so he swings on his bike and decides to take the long way to the market, right past that intersection. There's quite a few people milling about, confused, so he stops at the right.]
Hey... you know what's happening here?

i. residents/mission 001
(west end apartment complex, convenience store, & the crosswalk)
[It's too hot to sleep.
Mike had gotten home shortly after dawn and the sun was already sweltering, heating the apartment building's misshapen metal door enough for only the briefest of contact. Inside, the temperature was only slightly cooler, as expected of a run down older building with no air conditioning system. There's no elevator available at the B-side entrance and after climbing five flights of stairs to his apartment, he'd dropped his bag on the kitchenette counter, turned on the industrial fan for carpet drying that he'd borrowed from work, and passed out on the futon. Only to wake up all sweaty and overheating after ten minutes. He's spent most of the morning drinking quickly warmed beer and sitting directly in front of the noisy metal fan in nothing but his underwear. Someone banged on the door about the "roaring motor noise" earlier; he thinks it was Mr. Kincaid from the down the hall, but fuck that guy. Kincaid leaves his television on all day at top volume when Mike is trying to sleep, and the fan noise is now classified as some kind of inadvertent payback.
Sleep continues to elude him despite exhaustion, and his skin remains uncomfortably sticky. He's just finishing flat beer number five when his phone vibrates. It takes him a second to register the quieter sound under the fan, and an additional ten minutes of constant buzzing to get off the floor and grab the phone sticking half way out of his bag on the counter. Intending to just shut it off, it appears to already be, buttons unresponsive. Whatever. After setting it back on the counter, he belatedly notes that it was cold and reaches out to touch the screen again, pausing as it comes on by itself, displaying the message; one Mike deems a wrong number or force-downloaded game app. He thinks nothing of it again, continuing his day of sloth.
Until 2:13. When the smoke alarm goes off, one he had detached from the wall years ago and then again when they'd installed a new system. That one required more than just battery removal, and there's no way the alarm is working with missing electrical components. Yet, it's blinking above his door and shrieking shrilly. Footsteps sound in the hallway, frantic as is custom of a number of his floor neighbours, children yelling about fire and making siren noises because they want to see the firetrucks with the Pokemon. There is a faint smell of smoke, but Mike can't be sure if the building's on fire or it's the dumpster in the alley behind the apartment complex again.
After finally getting dressed, in grease-stained cargo shorts and a ripped t-shirt, he reluctantly leaves the building, immediately trudging away from the other displaced residents to avoid discussion; as much as one could trudge in plastic flipflops. A creature of the night for the last four years, Mike squints at the daylight penetrating his sunglasses and heads for the convenience store. The neon beer and lottery signs are off, and a small cardboard plaque on the door states they're closed due to malfunctioning air conditioning. He can see the crosswalk from here, and there's some sort of pull to it, whether mysterious or an imagined sensation from the beginnings of heat stroke or inebriation, and Mike's drawn to bright white lines. Once there, among a few other people, some he recognises and some he doesn't, the phone in his pocket vibrates again and only now does he think about that weird message. He's here and it's 3:00.]

NIER | OTA
[Nier pauses for several minutes while staring at his phone looking baffled and utterly bewildered. Something in his mind snaps and he finds himself feeling paranoid of everything around him. Did the city go mad overnight or was he the one who went mad? Nier doesn't have any answers. He's getting so angry over it that he starts screaming. ]
Okay, hold up. How the heck do you even say these words? It all looks like Greek to me!! You know what? No. I'm not even going to try and pronounce them properly. It will be wrong.
Sorry I never went to the linguistics program. Cut me some slack.

crosswalk b
[He's crouching down by the end of the crosswalk where it meets the sidewalk, worn and weathered asphalt cracking in one tiny place, taking a photo of something. It's a worm, baked in the sun, glittery dried trail around it. It had likely tried to make it to the storm drain. After the image is captured, Mike shoves his camera back into his pocket and glances up at Nier.]

Aside from the sudden "ARG" sprung on him (that's what he thinks it is, until--) and basically being doxxed on the internet for some reason, he finds that he isn't alone at the very least. This app should be sued for leaking personal information online, he vaguely thinks. ]

Weirdly, his phone is not working. And yet... There's a text. He hums, and then looks around. Might as well follow the cryptic message.]
Which crosswalk?
[And so he makes his way to what he thinks it's the right place.]
AVA
Ava?
[That's an interesting name. He presses on it and finds his profile after a bit of searching. That's not a good picture of him. Where could they have gotten it from?]
Mission one was easy, but this second one sounds like a setting for a bad video game. Do we really need to do this?
[Not like he plays any.]
Ava
[ Leon waves as a greeting and leaves it at that.]
Are video games getting more advanced? The only one I know is Snake.

[ Honestly, Judai isn't really bothered by this at all. Well, he is, but he isn't as concerned as he probably should be. After jumping to other dimensions and traveling through time, this is kind of... okay. Sure, Daitokuji, Winged Kuriboh, and Yubel are nowhere to be found, but maybe they just got separated. It's not as bad as it could be, so he isn't really sweating it. He'll just have to go around the city and look for them. ]
Hey, are everyone's decks all right?

Deuce Spade | OTA
[ Deuce is sure, very sure, that his phone hasn't left his person the entire day. And yet there it is, staring him in the face: a new, foreign app that he can't delete. The strange message it gives him is cause for a frown, and just like that, he's prying the back of his phone case open with the ease of someone quite practiced in tinkering.
Because frankly, he is. ]
That app doesn't seem to have any special permissions, so...
[ Nothing looks physically amiss upon inspection. He removes and replaces the battery, then the SIM card, brow furrowing. His next utterance is a pensive hum, as he moves on with his inspection of his phone. It could be that he's right next to someone, talking to himself. Good times. ]
B. Network
[ When Deuce's search turns up nothing new and he grudgingly relents, he decides to see what sort of response he gets from the barren forums. ]
Anyone else find a new app hijacked their phone?
It has to be malware, right?
[ Replacing his phone really isn't in the budget, but... ]
C. The White Rabbit Teahouse (6/3)
[ It may be hot as blazes, and it may be his birthday, but Deuce is still on shift. For anyone visiting their favorite local western-style teahouse themed after a certain work of fiction, Deuce is still busily serving tables in the quaint little establishment, same as always.
The difference being that his card suit-patterned uniform today includes a big blue rosette ribbon with BIRTHDAY BOY emblazoned upon it for all to see. Deuce does his best to ignore the cheerful signal of his special day, considering the day's really no different than any other, and likewise aims to overlook any pointed glances at his Badge of Acquired Age. ]
Welcome to the White Rabbit, may I take your order?
C
[It feels like a long time since he's had the opportunity to sit down and just relax. His life is nothing short of chaotic so stopping by the teahouse is just....nice.]
Is today your birthday?

Kainé | OTA
[ Against her better judgement, and her very best efforts, Kainé finds herself among a collection of strangers. She doesn't recognize anyone thus far, which she considers an enormous relief. The last thing she wants is for Lily, Nier, or his little sister to get caught up in whatever this is.
Honestly, she's expecting some attempt at extortion. Joke's on them though, she will absolutely wipe the floor with the culprit if they present themselves...so she thinks. ]
How'd this crap even get on my phone?
[ She barely uses her phone for anything but texting her family, both immediate and essentially adopted... ]
B. Network
All right, whose damn idea of a prank is this?
You better not be messing with my family, or I'll cram this phone down your throat.
A
[Nier runs over to her sprinting. He's physically weak so he already out of breath when he starts speaking.]
I was looking everywhere for you. Thank goodness you aren't hurt.

| his nokia brick phone is attached to a collar and reads things aloud
i. newcomers/mission 001
[He can still feel the pull of that girl's barrier, tugging against his desperate will to leave some of his power behind, but... now it's all changed. He's no longer under an overpass being ripped from someone's body. It's... a shrine. More modern than the one he'd had himself back in that village centuries ago. His ears prick up, listening for sounds of anyone, only encountering the typical animal noises in the forest behind the honden. He tilts his head and something heavy drags it too far.]
What?
[He rubs his neck against the offertory box, trying to dislodge the infernal contraption, but it remains. He cannot access any of his power, and for Rago, that means at least that he was successful in leaving it behind in Jiro. He can no longer help. His contemplation is interrupted by someone coming up the path and Rago leaps into the bushes to hide, crouching low to the ground, tail swishing. Observing, because he doesn't know where he is, and it's best not to reveal himself. He spends the hour traversing along the edge of the treeline, but nothing happens, nothing changes, and he is... very lost. This is not Gamagori.
The heavy brick thing attached to the collar vibrates once, and he hisses wildly, jumping and trying to run from it instinctively... to no avail. It's now beeping and words come from it. Like the rectangle. Rago growls as he listens to the instructions. Half of them he doesn't understand. Decryption? The city crosswalk, whatever that is, will be in the city, and he's on the outskirts. With one more thorough look around for traps or surprises, he's satisfied there isn't anyone currently in pursuit, and he trots down into the more populated area.
He sticks to alleys and close to building walls, scampering quickly because the tar is hot under his soft paws. Hot, hot, hot. It isn't long before he's muttering to himself as he darts into another shady enclave of a doorway to cool off.]
Where the fuck is this "crosswalk"?

Styx | ota
[Styx opens his eyes, and he's in a fountain.
for a split second, before his brain completely kicks back into action, he thinks that he's tripped and dunked his head into the slushie machine - which, considering that he'd just been at the bodega looking for snacks a literal six seconds ago, is at least situationally relevant if not something a normal person would assume even under duress. the liquid is a regular clear though, and nothing tastes like fruit punch or berry blast, so...
so, what? what the hell is actually happening, then?
his floundering eventually catches onto the fountain ledge and he's able to pull himself up into a sitting position, rising from the shallow depths like some sort of hulking lake monster of legend. the drummer's confusion makes him slow, even more so than usual, and rather than prioritize hauling his ass out of the fucking water he remains there with his head tilted back and his expression one of open amazement.
there's no way this is Eddan. he's never left the confines of his birth city but even he knows that there's a certain slickness to the island, a glimmering veneer of rapid progress that is clearly missing from the skyline he's gaping at now. what the hell had he done? people had always joked about him having hit his head at some point, leaving him living in another world, but right now Styx is starting to wonder if maybe that wasn't a joke for once. it's a troubling thing to contemplate, and it prompts the tiniest of furrows to his brow.
should anyone stare at the sopping wet giant just sitting like a dumbass in the local park's otherwise picturesque fountain, eventually Styx will catch onto the familiar feeling of eyes upon him and wrest his gaze from the cityscape to the owner of that ogling pair of orbs. he smiles, more than a little sheepish, and makes a vague gesture at the water.]
Oh, uh, sorry! You wanna use it? Can get out real quick if you do, 's no problem!
[use...the fountain. this upheaval has really got his minimal brain cells all jumbled up, hasn't it.]

[Styx can also be found standing at pretty much any (incorrect) four-way stop in the city looking for the crosswalk so feel free to assume there's a big moron trying not to stare too obviously at your character while trying to figure out if they're 'other' or not and react accordingly. or just PM me for something else! idk I'm just excited to be here. ouo]
Arrival
He slows to a stop as he's walking by, to blatantly stare at Styx just. Sitting in the fountain. until Styx speaks up first.]
